How does life coaching work?
You choose a coach, have a free introductory call to see whether you fit, and if you do, you work together toward specific goals with regular sessions and accountability in between. Most coaching now happens by video, so your coach does not need to be local.
How do you find a life coach?
Start with the problem, not the job title. You do not need to decide whether you want a mindset coach or a transition coach before you begin. Start with what is actually happening. Stuck in a job you have outgrown. Dreading Sunday nights. Wanting to start something and never quite starting it. Search the specialization that matches the problem and the labels sort themselves out.
Look at verified hours, not years in business. Someone can have called themselves a coach for a decade and have coached forty hours. Someone else qualified two years ago and has done a thousand. Hours with real clients is the number that tells you something, which is why we verify it on every profile here.
Read reviews for specifics. “Life-changing experience” tells you nothing. “She helped me get through three months of interviews without falling apart” tells you a lot. Look for reviews that describe what actually happened.
Decide whether location matters to you. Most coaching now happens by video, so your coach does not need to be in your city. Some people still prefer someone local, or someone who knows their market. Both are fine, and you can search either way.
Talk to at least two. Fit matters more than credentials in coaching, and you cannot assess fit from a profile page. Shortlist two or three, use the free consultations, and compare. The difference between coaches is usually obvious once you have spoken to more than one.
If you are stuck, let us match you. If narrowing it down is the hard part, tell us what you are working on and we will suggest coaches who fit.
What does a life coach cost?
Coaching rates vary a lot. Most life coaches charge somewhere between $50 and $500 an hour, and where a particular coach sits in that range depends on their experience, their specialization and where they are based. Coaching is unregulated, so coaches set their own rates.
What is more useful to know is how the pricing tends to be structured.
Packages usually cost less per session than booking one at a time. Most coaches work in blocks, often six or twelve sessions, because that is roughly how long meaningful change takes. The per-session price normally drops when you commit to a block.
There are cheaper ways in than one-to-one coaching. Plenty of coaches on Life Coach Hub sell courses, worksheets and digital products through their store, often at a fraction of the cost of live sessions. If budget is the thing stopping you, that is a real option rather than a consolation prize.
And the first conversation is free. Ask about cost on the consultation call. Any coach worth working with will give you a straight answer, and how they handle that question tells you something in itself.
What happens on your first call?
Most people booking a first call with a coach have no idea what they are walking into, and quietly worry it will turn into a sales pitch. Here is what it actually looks like.
It is usually 20 to 30 minutes, and it is free. You talk about what is going on and what you would like to be different. The coach asks questions, some of which will be more useful than you expect, because asking better questions is most of what coaching is. By the end you both have a sense of whether this is a good match.
You are not expected to arrive with a tidy explanation of your problem. “I’m not sure exactly, I just know something needs to change” is a completely normal way to start.
Things worth asking them:
- How do you usually work with someone dealing with this?
- How long do people typically work with you?
- What actually happens in a session?
- Have you worked with someone in a situation like mine?
- What does this cost, and how is it structured?
And afterwards, you can say no. A free consultation is not a commitment to anything. Talk to as many coaches as you want, and if none of them is a fit, say so. A coach who makes that awkward has told you something useful about how they work.
Five great reasons to hire a life coach
- A life coach helps you deal with pressure and stress as you make important changes.
- Coaching can make you start asking the right questions. You’ll look beyond the self-limiting mindset that has been holding you back.
- You can maintain motivation to improve your life. The life coach knows how to encourage you.
- With a life coach you’ll learn to think about what you can do. This is much more powerful than thinking about what you can’t do.
- Life coaching is a proven way to create a satisfying life. What you really want is inside you. And the coach will teach you how to listen to your heart.
