How to reach your goals using the power of why

You can reach for the moon once you know why you want what you want.

Have you ever started something knowing what you want, with a clear vision on how you are going to make it, knowing how you are going to get there and fully committed to reaching your goal? And eventually you lose your interest for your goal, not knowing exactly what happened, just thinking it was bad luck.

You may think that you didn’t make your plans properly or maybe suffered from a lack of organization. But then why you didn’t go back and re-arrange your plans and find a new approach to reaching your goal?

According to my own experience and research the reason you didn’t reach your goal is not because of bad luck, or a bad economy. The reason why you didn’t reach your goals is because you didn’t have enough WHY.

Why knowing why is more important than knowing what

Knowing what you want is very important, gives you clarity and direction in life, but this is only one piece of the puzzle. I would say that knowing what you want will only take you only 10% closer to your goal. A further 10% is due to mechanics. A full 80% of reaching your goal is knowing why you want to get there.

Knowing what you want = 10%

Mechanics = 10%

Knowing why you want it = 80%

Let me give you an example, and what better example than money, right?

Why do you want what you want

A lot of people want more money, maybe even dream of becoming millionaires. But if you ask them why you want more money they’ll say something like I want to be able to pay my bills every month, I want to pay for my kid’s college, I want to pay my mortgage, I want to travel around the world, I want to enjoy life, or I want to drive a nice car.

All these reasons may seem to you very legit, but they don’t do much to motivate you to do whatever it takes to actually get out there, kick some ass and make the money you desire. Let me explain to you how you can use the power of why not just to help you clarify your goals, but also to help you breakthrough any limitation.

Find out the real reasons for wanting what you want

Let say that I want more money. First I have to be more specific about how much money I want to make. Let’s say I want to create an income of $10,000 per month. Before to even I start making plans in how to make this kind of money, I need to know and understand why I want to make this kind of money.

So let’s start with the question: Why do I want to make $10,000 per month?

Reason #1: Because I want to buy my house

  • Why do I want to buy a house? = Because I want to provide to my family

Reason # 2: Because I want to be debt free.

  • Why do I want to be debt free? = Because I don’t want to worry about the money I owe.
  • Why don’t I want to worry about the money I owe? = Because it drains my energy just to think about how much money I owe.
  • Why does it drain my energy? = Because I’m thinking about it constantly and this worry doesn’t allows me to focus on the solution.
  • Why doesn’t it allow me to focus in the solution? = Because I care about people and I want to keep a good reputation.
  • Why do I care about other people and maintaining a good reputation? = Because it makes me feel that I’m significant to others.

This is my reason #2: Because I want to be debt free in order to be significant to other people.

Reason # 3: Because I want to travel with my family.

  • Why do I want to travel with my family? = Because it will be a good experience with my family.
  • Why it will be a good experience with my family? = Because we will be spending some time together out of our regular routine.

Reason #4: Because I want to drive a nice car.

  • Why do I want to drive a nice car? = Because it will feel good to drive it.
  • Why will it feel good to drive it? = Because it will create a sense of certainty when I drive to a business meeting.
  • Why will it create a sense of certainty? = Because other people will see me and think that I know what I’m doing.

This is my reason # 4: Because I want to drive a nice car in order to create a good image which gives me greater self confidence.

Reason # 5: Because I will be able to create new opportunities to make more money.

  • Why do I want to create new opportunities to make more money? = Because I will grow financially.
  • Why do I want to grow financially? = Because I will be able to contribute more to other people.
  • Why do I want to contribute to other people? = Because I will transform their lives in a positive way.
  • Why do I want to transform people’s lives in a positive way? = Because I want to make a bigger impact on the world.
  • Why do I want to make bigger impact on the world? = Because it will give me greater sense of growth and contribution.

From this point, with this list you can go in any direction, you can go deeper and clarify your values in life, understand what needs are being met, or create a better plan in how to reach your goal.

Write down your list of reasons for what you want

The next step is to write down in a piece of paper with big letters your goals and the reasons why you want to reach them.

The reasons why I want to create a $10,000 monthly income are:

  • Reason #1: Because I want to buy a house and provide for my family since this makes me feel good they have what they need.
  • Reason #2: Because I want to be debt free in order to be significant to other people.
  • Reason #3: Because I want to travel with my family and spend good quality time together.
  • Reason # 4: Because I want to drive a nice car in order to create a good image which gives me greater self confidence.
  • Reason # 5: Because I will be able to create new opportunities to make more money and thereby make a bigger impact on the world, and this gives me a greater sense of growth and contribution.

Next put that piece of paper on the wall where you can see it and read it every day, and as many times a day as you can, until is part of you. You will not just understand it intellectually but also emotionally, and once you’ve done all this, next time you are negotiating a contract, or your salary, you will feel the power and strength to move forward with the negotiations because your subconscious will take over knowing what you are after or maybe you will do it completely conscious.

What do you want?

Knowing why you want something is more important than knowing what you want, because “why” will give you the strength, power and energy to breakthrough any obstacle or limitation.
