Planning To Be Successful Can End Your Success Before It Begins

Everyone says “I plan on being successful”, so why is it that everyone is not successful?

Honestly the only reason some are successful and others are not is because success is not a plan. Success is a lifestyle. Your goals, who you want to become, or what you want to achieve in life should be your plan. When you plan to “Be Successful”, you really don’t have a plan.

The plan begins to come together when you decide what it is you want to do.  Many people are frustrated because they are doing everything they were told to do and still do not feel that sense of accomplishment or success. What everyone should have been taught was to:

1. Find that thing(s) in life that you love to do.

Shauna Niequist once said, “It’s not hard to decide what you want your life to be about. What’s hard, is figuring out what you’re willing to give up in order to do the things you really care about.”

That thing in life that brings you total joy. That thing in life you can’t stop focusing on. That is your destiny. That is the thing that will bring about the most success for you.

2. Seek knowledge.

Now that you know what you would like to do with your life, seek knowledge. “If money is your hope for independence, you will never have it. To quote Henry Ford, “the only real security that a man will have in this world is a reserve of knowledge, experience, and ability.”

Planning to be successful will get you nowhere.  The only thing that will help you reach your goals is knowledge.  Whether it is by way of schooling, internship, research, and/or coaching, knowledge is key.

3. Have a Plan of Action.

Put together an Action Plan. Tom Landry is quoted as saying that “Setting a goal is not the main thing. It is deciding how you will go about achieving it and staying with that plan.”

Ever heard the saying, “No one ever plans to fail. They just fail to plan”?  To become successful you have to have a plan.  Having a plan will keep you focused and hopefully accountable.

Les Brown said, “Review your goals twice every day in order to be focused on achieving them.”  Write out your plan, review it as often as possible and stay on course.

4. Achieve one goal at a time.

Don’t overwhelm yourself. Trying to achieve your dreams as fast as possible should not be what you are looking do. Plan to achieve a specific goal. Once you achieve that goal, then set a new goal and achieve that one. By continuing this cycle of achievements, you become successful.  Your life is now full of achievements.  Success is now your lifestyle.
