I love this new era in television where all the graphic novels start coming to the black mirror, accessible from the comfort of your own home. One of my favourite shows is The Walking Dead because, firstly, it’s based on a graphic novel. Secondly, it is extremely well done as a TV show with much entertainment value and morals. And lastly, because it talks about zombies.
Zombies are the undead, walking around with only one goal in mind: food. The reason why this show and concept is so intriguing is because of the echo it has in social life today. Most people live their lives like zombies. Apathetic, lazy, uninterested and boring individuals living life, every day, as though they are constantly chasing after something.
Now, there are a variety of zombies as cinematography has shown us:
Rage Zombies. These people are always in a rush to getting to their next meeting. They are often glued to their phone and feel awkward to make any form of eye contact with you unless it serves them somehow. When confronted, they take to being aggressive, often mean-spirited and at times, cruel.
Swarm Zombies. These are usually individuals who go about their own thing until attention is grabbed by one (be it anything) and then by all. These are mindless zombies who follow the pack at great speed and length just to get ahead. They are often affected by mindless consumerism and the need to “keep up with The Jones”, outdoing everyone as quickly as possible.
Basic Walkers. A basic zombie is the canniest of them all. They hide in plain sight and appear to look normal from afar, by doing normal social things that others do. They smile when needed and have mastered the art of hiding their feelings or pretending, if you will. They appear happy but are slowly dying inside for living a life that is unfulfilling and repetitive for them.
What kind of zombie are you? You can continue being one, or you can wake up and become human again. The choice is yours. This is your chance at survival. Choose wisely.
