Anxiety affects millions of people, with some having an anxiety disorder they are not even aware of. Social anxiety, stress, worry, and fear are all habits related to anxiety, and affect us in ways that impact our lives immeasurably.
Do you have an anxiety disorder? Symptoms of anxiety attacks include:
- Overwhelming panic.
- Feeling of losing control or going mad.
- Heart palpitations or chest pain.
- Feeling like you’re going to pass out.
- Trouble breathing.
- Hyperventilation.
- Hot flushes or chills.
- Trembling or shaking.
Thought processes associated with anxiety tend to be about the future, and what if this or that happens. These thoughts can seem irrational when challenged; however, when you are in the throes of an anxiety attack, it seems that you are unable to view things in a rational way.
With time, and a committment to change, it is possible to gain control over your anxious thoughts. You can do this by:
- Identifying what the trigger is that starts the spiral of anxiety.
- Noticing what thoughts are there – are they blaming yourself, are they confirming that you are right and things always go wrong.
- Once you know what the thoughts are you can challenge them – is this true? what are the chances that this will happen? why do I think the worst case scenario all the time?
Thoughts like these can really hold us back from being the best we can be and from even trying, because “what’s the point, I will only fail”
When we liberate ourselves from such thought processes we open ourselves up to challenging ourselves in other ways – for example setting goals, taking responsibility for our life and opening up horizons we once never dreamt possible.
